BMW Pannier Frames Mounting
Detail

Frames are BMW Part No. 46.54.1.239.487 (pair)
Panniers are BMW Part No. 46.54.2.315.185 (pair)
as for R series twins 1982 - 1985. These are now discontinued but there are patterns available and possibly second-hands (see Motobins and Motorworks web sites).

    Key:
  1. Le Mans I/II type rear carrier/grab rail witb bolt-on carrier section.
  2. Top front hole of pannier frame (normally goes to BMW rear suspension top bolt) is fixed by long 13mm bolt, spacers and locknut to last hole in frame gusset behind Guzzi's top spring mounting. Use large washers both sides of pannier frame hole.
  3. Lower support tube is bent slightly to mate with silencer bolt (T3 footrest carrier). Together with the above, this makes pannier frame in line with Guzzi frame (not sloping up or down).
  4. Back end of pannier frame has flat welded plate on top with two holes (for a topbox?). This is attached to rear carrier thus:
    1. A steel 'U' bracket 7in. long hangs down from rear carrier's side bolts (where carrier section is attached to main grab rail section).
    2. A right-angled join is made between bottom end of 'U' bracket and pannier frame top plate by a 1in. square section alloy 'tube' 3.5in. long.
    3. The alloy 'tube' is attached to pannier frame top plate using 2 x 10mm nuts & bolts, and to 'U' bracket by 1 x 10mm nut & bolt.
    4. To make this possible, original rear mount tube on pannier frame for fitting to back of BMW frame must be sawn off.

Notes
Obviously this applies to both left and right sides. Important – length of spacers 'B' and angle of tubes 'C' must be set such that the back of left hand pannier clears the top rear brake caliper's mounting bolt by at least 1/4 inch when mounted! For symmetry, the right hand side is set the same distance out although there's plenty of room on the drive box side.
The arrangement has proved very succesful and is sturdy enough for loads up to 10kg (the maximum) for each pannier – so far!
